Stiff hands in the morning are a common sign of osteoarthritis (also known as "wear-and-tear arthritis) but can be caused by other conditions as well. These include autoimmune forms of arthritis as well as Dupuytren's contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and scleroderma.1 Even certain drugs can cause morning hand stiffness in some people.
